Central Arkansas led all teams with four selections, including two first-team honorees. Lamar and Sam Houston State each placed three student-athletes on the teams, while Oral Roberts, Stephen F. Austin and Northwestern State had two apiece. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Nicholls State each had one student-athlete.
Under the direction of second-year coach David McFatrich, the Sugar Bears return four starters and a libero. Joining Collins on the first-team all-conference team is junior right side hitter Jessica Nagy. Nagy, a Carleton, Mich., native, finished third in the conference in service aces per set (0.39). Seniors Taylor Hammonds and Jessica Hays were tabbed to the second-team all-conference squad. Hammonds, a Tomball, Texas, product, accumulated 258 kills in 112 sets and finished seventh in hitting percentage (.285). Hays was a 2010 first team selection and claimed the freshman of the year award in 2008.
Also receiving first-team preseason all-conference recognition is Central Arkansas’ Collins, who was named the 2010 freshman of the year and a second-team honoree in 2011. While leading the Sugar Bears to a fourth consecutive division title, Collins, a native of Pearland, Texas, finished second in the Southland in assists (1,048) and averaged 11.64 assists in conference play.
