Central Arkansas has been picked win the 2012 Southland Conference regular-season championship by a vote of the league’s coaches and sports information directors, the conference office announced Wednesday.

Central Arkansas received four first-place votes in both polls and 75 points in the coaches’ poll while compiling 73 points in the SID poll. Oral Roberts garnered five first-place nods in the coaches’ poll and four first-place votes in the SID poll while collecting 73 points in each. The Golden Eagles received the most first-place votes in the two polls with nine out of a possible 20.

UCA claimed its fourth consecutive East Division title last season with an overall record of 17-15 while posting a 10-6 conference record. The Sugar Bears, who are under the direction of second-year coach David McFatrich, return four starters and a libero, including last season’s second-team all-conference performer Marissa Collins. Collins, the 2010 freshman of the year, finished second in the Southland last season with 10.38 assists per set in conference play. Also returning for UCA is junior Jessica Nagy, a first-team preseason all-conference pick, who finished third in the conference with 0.39 service aces per set. Collins and Nagy both earned first-team preseason all-conference honors while seniors Taylor Hammonds and Jessica Hays were second-team picks. Hays was a 2010 first team selection and claimed the freshman of the year award in 2008.
