UCA baseball coach Doug Clark noted back-to-back shutouts during the sweep of SFA.
In a 1-0 victory in 11 innings in the series opener, UCA starter Jeremy Cloud faced the minimum of 27 batters over nine innings. He allowed one hit, but that was neutralized by a double play.
"It's hard in baseball to win a three-game series in conference play," Clark said. "lt's hard to get two shutouts in a row in college baseball when you have aluminum bats. In college baseball, it's all about pitching, pitching, pitching. We're not as offensive as we have been but we're getting better. For the first time in my coaching career, I have a set lineup. It's just my nature to change things up. We used something like five first basemen in our season-opener and I'm not sure a couple of them had ever played first base."
Conway transfer Brandon Solberg gave Clark some solid work in Sunday's victory.
"He's tough to watch because he'll walk people; I think I need to get in the corner of the dugout with him and not watch," Clark said. "But he has great poise and commands. He walks guys but always keeps his poise."
He noted, despite the fast start, the Bears have 15 remaining weeks of conference series.
"It's a long season," he said. "It's hard to give our guys sainthood right now but it represents progress."...
