SELA 4-2/11-6
UCA 4-2/11-6

SELA defeats Tulane at Hammond tonight by 5-3..see article below from SELA....

NEW ORLEANS – Senior left fielder Brandon Street launched a two-run homer to put the Lions out in front for good and senior right handed pitcher Chris Cappo limited the Green Wave to just two runs on five hits as the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team (11-6, 4-2 Southland Conference) rallied to defeat the Tulane Green Wave (11-8) 5-3 on Wednesday night in game one of the 2009 Senator’s Cup Series

After a scoreless opening frame, Tulane struck first with one in the top of the second, as a one-out double and a two-out run scoring single put the Lions down 1-0 after two.

However, Southeastern, which has come-from-behind in every win this season, rallied to take the lead in the third.

After drawing a one-out walk, sophomore center fielder Cass Hargis stole second. Senior second baseman Ty Summerlin then extended his season-best hitting streak to ten games with a single up the middle to score Hargis and tie things up at 1-1.

Senior left fielder Brandon Street followed with his third home run of the season. The line drive shot over the left center field wall was the 100th base hit of Street’s career and staked the Lions to a 3-1 lead heading into the bottom of the third.

With the Lions out in front, Cappo found a groove, turning away the Green Wave in the third and fourth. Tulane made it 3-2 with a run in the bottom of the fifth, but that’s all the Green Wave could manage off of the Lion right hander.

Cappo, a native of Chalmette, went 7.0 innings, allowing two runs on five hits while walking one and striking out five, before giving way to senior third baseman/closer Chris Franklin.

With Cappo and Franklin keeping the Green Wave lineup in check, the Lions looked for some insurance. A sixth-inning home run by sophomore first baseman/catcher Josh Cryer put Southeastern out in front 4-2 and an RBI groundout by freshman shortstop Justin Boudreaux put the Lions out in front 5-2 entering the bottom of the ninth.

Tulane refused to go quietly as Green Wave first baseman Sam Honeck led off the bottom of the ninth with a long home run to left center field to make it 5-3. However, Franklin regained his composure to retire the next three batters in order to preserve the win and pick up his fourth save.

The Lions and Green Wave will return to action on Wednesday in Hammond for game two of the 2009 Senator’s Cup Series. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field. Live stats and streaming audio play-by-play will be available online at www.LionSports.net, and the game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU 90.9 FM.

NOTES

Wednesday night’s win was the 100th career win at Southeastern for head coach Jay Artigues. The Lion skipper is 100-86 in his fourth season in Hammond. He is just the fourth Lion skipper in school history to reach the triple digit wins mark.

you may have gotten the wrong article for the wrong game, they won 11-9 last night. But either way, SELA comes in hot winners of 5 in a row! We are going to have to start throwing better, fielding better, and get clutch hitting in this series and pick things back up!

We beat Tulane 5-3 on Tuesday, in New Orleans, and again on Wednesday night in Hammond, 11-9.

Bears fall 5-3...looks like more miscues were the source of the problem.
Hopefully they can get back on track and win the series.

I would say the errors are killing us - 3 more today - BUT, they didn't score any unearned runs. They had just three hits. Problem is one was a homer and another a triple.

We actually outhit them today, just didn't do enough to score the runners we had in the late innings.

Oh, and Tye got moved up the 7 spot....... and went 0-for-4.

I would rather be faced with correcting errors than not have pitching...the former is mostly concentration and practice....looks like we have some solid pitchers....

Good to see them bounce back after a couple of games of having trouble with the leather.
