BEARS SIGN THREE FOR BASEBALL
CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas baseball team picked up three players in the early signing period, according to Bears head coach Doug Clark. Drew Trout, Logan Moon, and Doug Votolato have all signed to compete for the Bears in the 2010-2011 academic year.
“This is a talented group of players we are bringing to UCA,” said Clark. “We feel like this group of players’ tools and athleticism is a step up for our program and will help fill some of our needs with the players we will be losing after this year.”
Drew Trout, a 6-foot-3 left-handed pitcher/outfielder, comes to the Bears from Blue Valley West High School in Kansas. A three-year letterman and two-year co-captain at Blue Valley West, he was named first-team All-Eastern Kansas and All-Sunflower Team.
In 2009, he broke the Kansas state record for triples with 8 in only 20 games. Collegiate Baseball featured him as one of the top 20 players in the state of Kansas. He is also a pre-season Top 5 outfielder for the Kansas City metro area.
“Drew is a physical kid with good tools,” said Clark. “He has great arm strength and strength in his bats. On the mound, he throws 85-86 (miles per hour) with a nice slider. We feel like he has a chance to develop into a power pitcher in time. He will be a two-way player here at UCA.”
Logan Moon, a 6-2 outfielder from Blue Springs South High School in Missouri, was a two-sport athlete playing baseball and football. He is a two-year letterman on the baseball team. As a junior he hit .330 with a .523 slugging percentage. He was selected to the 2009 Examiner High School Baseball All-Area second team and a top 20 prospect at No. 8 in the 2007 Rawlings Perfect Game Atlantic Coast Underclass Showcase. In the summer, Moon was teammates with Trout playing with the Kansas City Barnstormers.
“Logan is a gifted athlete with raw baseball tools,” Clark said. “He has tremendous speed, a plus arm, and some pop in his bat. Logan is a plus defender with a ton of potential in his bat. He has a chance to possibly be a five-tool player in time.”
Doug Votolato, a 6-2 infielder, comes to the Bears from Marcus High School in Flower Mound, TX. He is a switch-hitting infielder, a three-year varsity letterman, and team captain. As a junior, he batted .320 with 3 home runs and 15 RBI. Votolato also competes in summer ball with the Dallas Tigers, one of the top select teams in the state of Texas.
He batted .475 with 2 home runs and 35 stolen bases for the Tigers. Votolato was also selected to the Dallas Metro Scout League All-Stars to compete in the Perfect Game fall tournament in Jupiter, FL.
“Doug is a plus athlete who’s baseball tools are getting better and better,” Clark said. “He is a plus runner with nice actions on the infield. He projects to have a very high ceiling with his tools and frame. Doug has shown signs of some pop in his bat and should develop into a nice player as he gains some strength.”...
