I didn't mean to imply that .279 is a good average. I was just trying to say that if the opposition is hitting .053 better than you are, you're not going to win often.
Same is true if the team we were hitting .332 and our competition was hitting .385. (Although it would look a lot better if we were hitting well over .300.)

Seven of the primary starting position players are hitting at or above .300. A relevant comparison would if be six or so of the primary pitchers had ERA's below 4.50.

True. Most of those pushed their average up there during last night's game though. There haven't been seven guys hitting .300 all season. I do understand how averages work, so I know that some guys have been red hot to get their average up to that mark though.
But again, it doesn't matter how good you're team average is if the opposition's is 50 points higher.
