BEARS OPEN HOME SERIES THURSDAY

Quote:
The UCA baseball team, coming off an 8-6 victory over 21st ranked Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday, returns home for a three-game series with Southland Conference foe McNeese State beginning Thursday night at 6:30 at Bear Stadium.

The series between the Bears (8-16, 3-6 Southland) and the Cowboys (12-11, 5-4) will run Thursday-Saturday due to a Southland rule prohibiting competition on Easter Sunday.

T-shirts will be given away to the first 50 fans at Thursday night's game, which will also feature 25-cent hot dogs provided by Aramark. New men's basketball head coach Corliss Williamson will throw out the first pitch at approximately 6:25.

Friday's game is scheduled to begin at 6:30, with the series finale slated for Saturday at 1 p.m.

The games can be heard on KUCA 91.3 FM The Bear or online at ucasports.com, with free live video also available.

just a head's up, and I know nothing for a fact yet, but it was discussed a bit at practice yesterday, but IF the weather is bad, which it is supposed to be on Saturday, there may be a double header on Friday. But again, that about all I know from being at practice yesterday. As for tonight, get there early with Coach Williamson throwing out the first pitch and $.25 hot dogs!

Weather update as of now:
Friday: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 75. Breezy, with a south southeast wind between 10 and 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Friday Night: Showers and thunderstorms likely before 5am, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 5am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 54. South southwest wind around 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Saturday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 7am, then a chance of showers between 7am and 1pm. Partly cloudy, with a high near 73. West wind between 10 and 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Well, if there's anything good about last night's game, it's that Tye has really turned things around at the plate. I don't know where it was two or three weeks ago, but it was no where near the .278 it is now.

The bad things are that there were two more errors yesterday, leading to three unearned runs for an already struggling Wild. Then, after cutting it from 8-1 to 8-6 we give up four runs in the next half inning. Pretty good job by McKenzie at the end to at least give us a shot.

Any more word yet on the possibility of a DH today?

50% of liquid sunshine by 5pm, 30% starting at noon. Doesn't look good.

COWBOYS HOLD OFF BEARS 12-8
BASEBALL • Apr 1, 2010
CONWAY, Ark _ The McNeese State Cowboys hit two home runs in the first two innings for an early lead and went on to record a 12-8 victory over the University of Central Arkansas Bears on Thursday night at Bear Stadium.

McNeese’s Lee Orr had a two-run shot in the second inning and Bryn Thompson added a three-run home run in the third for a 6-0 lead. But despite the early deficit the Bears (8-17, 3-7) would not go away. Cowboys starter Dustin Lloyd held the Bears in check for two innings but they got a single run in the third when Tye Throneberry singled and scored on a throwing error by shortstop Matt Fontenot...

All I know is that the game is scheduled to begin at 5 today instead of 6:30...

Today: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 4pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 75. Breezy, with a south wind between 15 and 20 mph. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Tonight: Showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 7pm. Low around 53. Southwest wind between 10 and 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Or to get just 16 hits and score 12 ... rough.

Reece has got to get back on track. I guess the same could be said for Wild's last few outings. Once again the hitting and the pitching can't show up on the same day.

And the bears find a way to lose today.
Evan Cox's record somehow continues to get worse. He blows a 5-2 lead in the 8th and 9th.

Then, we have the perfect setup for at least a tie with runners on 2nd and 3rd with ZERO outs. We somehow can't even get a ball out of the infield with our next four guys (Throneberry was intentionally walked).

I wasn't sure what to expect from this team with so many new players, but it's certainly been a disappointing season to me. Wow. How do you lose that game?

The guy in the middle of the diamond makes the biggest difference in whether you win or lose.

ERA

UCA - 7.61
Opponent - 4.65

Bears start each game three runs in the hole. Two guys that were expected to be weekend starters have ERA's near 12, with one of them out for the year. Unless an underclassman steps up, it is likely to continue to be a tough season.

Agree with all of that.

We average 5.5 runs per game, but when your EARNED run average is over 7, you're not going to win many.

When you're hitting as a team .279 but pitchers are getting hit at a .332 rate, you're not going to win many.

We have two pitchers with winning resumes. They are both 1-0.
Our saves leader is 1-5 with a 9.28 ERA.

The ONLY good news/statistic we win on that entire stat sheet is that we've hit more triples than our opponents. Seriously.

It is going to be very tough to make the SLC Tournament field the way that the team is playing right now. We are curently tied for last place with UTSA with the #1 team in the SLC coming up next. The good thing is we get TX State in San Marcos...we are currently 3-3 in SLC play on the road, while 0-6 at home! :?:
