CONWAY, Ark _ University of Central Arkansas baseball student-athlete Tye Throneberry and McNeese State women’s basketball student-athlete Kiara Johnson have been named the recipients of the 2009-10 Southland Conference Steve McCarty Citizenship Award, the league office announced Thursday.

The annual award recognizes one male and one female student-athlete from among the 12 league schools who exhibit outstanding qualities in citizenship, sportsmanship, leadership and community service. FRISCO, Texas- University of Central Arkansas seniors Tye Throneberry and Rebbecca Sorensen were named two of 24 student-athletes named Southland Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Year presented by CapitalOne Bank...

Throneberry, a baseball player from Pine Bluff, Ark., was the 2010 recipient of the Southland Conference Steve McCarty Citizenship Award. He hit .313 with 56 hits, 11 doubles, 2 home runs, 28 runs batted in and eight stolen bases as a senior. Throneberry graduated in may with a degree in biology and a 3.67 grade point average.

The Southland Conference annually recognizes the outstanding male and female student-athletes from each of the league’s member institutions. Student-athletes must be a letterwinner with a minimum 3.20 cumulative grade-point average and have completed at least two years of intercollegiate competition at the school from which he or she was nominated. The student-athletes were selected by their respective institution administrators.
