'11 Opening Weekend vs. SIU-E

Friday is the 2011 UCA Baseball Opening Day at the even newer looking Bear Stadium! The Bears and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville Cougars start their 3 game series at 3 pm on Friday, then continue it at 1 pm on both Saturday and Sunday. I wont be around the first two days, so hopefully we'll have some people updating on this thread throughout the weekend. UCA has had some very good success vs. SIUE the last few seasons, so hopefully Coach Gum's first 3 games, and season can get started off in the right direction. I'll say this, if their work, effort, and attitudes are any indication at all, we will be just fine this weekend.

Gum said the Bears spent the off-season getting used to the new system he put in place while also getting in great shape for the season.
“The main thing in the off season, with me being new, was putting a new system into place and getting everyone used to it. But we’ve been trying to get our bodies ready with weight room training, speed training, and conditioning,” Gum said.

Gum and his new staff will send out a young UCA squad that returns six position starters and seven pitchers. The returnees, along with a solid group of newcomers, will be playing on a new synthetic turf infield and a Bear Stadium with several other off-season changes. New brick walls down both foul lines and a new scoreboard highlight the improvements at the three-year-old facility.

“The facility upgrades are really nice,’ said Gum. “We feel like we’ve created a better atmosphere for baseball by pulling the walls in and getting the field closer to the fans. We feel like it’s helped us in recruiting tremendously. I think the players enjoy getting out there on that field everyday.’...

A little wobbly but a win is a win.....good to have SIUE give up 8 walks....good ball teams take advantage of what they are given and make a few breaks....congrats to Coach on a win in his first game as Bears skipper....hope for two more wins this weekend....

Congrats to Coach Gum on his first victory as UCA head coach. Happy for him and the team. =D>

! Weather held up nicely and glad there was a great crowd. (Before anyone else want to jump me for not being there, I had something called work so that is my excuse). Should be more excitement tomorrow and Sunday at 1 with nice weather. Looking forward to it!
