Congrats Angus and Houston!

Angus, Boudreaux Named Southland Baseball Players of the Week

Quote:
FRISCO, Texas - Southeastern Louisiana shortstop Justin Boudreaux has been named the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week and Central Arkansas right-hander Ryan Angus has been named the Southland pitcher of the week, the league office announced Tuesday.

Boudreaux was named most valuable player of the South Alabama Classic after leading Southeastern to wins over Alabama, UCF and South Alabama. The junior from Prairieville, La. (Dutchtown), was 7-for-14 in the three games in Mobile, Ala., and went 2-for-2 with a double and a home run in Southeastern's 13-1 victory over Tulane in the Lions' home opener. He went 4-for-5 with a home run and a season-high four RBI in a 7-2 win over UCF. In the four games last week, he was 8-for-17 with a pair of doubles and two home runs, while slugging .941. Boudreaux drew a walk and struck out only once and finished the week with a .526 on-base percentage. In seven games this season, he is batting .400 (12-for-30) for Southeastern, which has a 6-1 record.

Angus made his first start and went the distance in the series finale against Eastern Illinois, striking out 10 batters in nine innings and throwing 144 pitches. The junior from Carrollton, Texas (Hebron), allowed just six hits and two earned runs while walking three as the Bears completed their second consecutive series sweep to improve to 6-0. Angus has a 1.69 earned run average in two appearances this season

Honorable mention for hitter of the week goes to Sam Houston State first baseman Chris Andreas, Stephen F. Austin outfielder Bryson Myles and Central Arkansas designated hitter Jonathan Houston. Honorable mention for pitcher of the week goes to Southeastern Louisiana right-hander Stefan Lopez, Texas State right-hander Mitchell Pitts and Sam Houston State right-hander Michael Burchett. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland baseball sports information contacts.

Each school's SID nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player.

McCollum's Column: Angus delivers a new pitch and suddenly becomes prime

Nice story.

To understand the smiles, the laughs and the high-fives in the locker room of the University of Central Arkansas baseball team Sunday, you have to understand the wild story of Bear pitcher Ryan Angus.

It’s a story of a thrower — at least for one game — being transformed into a pitcher.

Angus, a junior righthander from Carollton, Texas, by way of a couple of places was discovered by new UCA coach Allen Gum on the discard pile of college baseball.
