McCollum's Column: Some morsels concerning UCA softball and baseballQuote:
UCA, which started out slowly beginning the Southland Conference schedule against some of the highest-rated teams, has improved of late, the highlight recent was series victory over Texas State, possibly the best overall college team to play in Conway this season.
“We outplayed them (the Bobcats),” said Gum in his first season after a highly successful tenure at Southern Arkansas University. “But this season has been about the good, the bad and the ugly. The biggest thing is we are starting to understand their roles ... The great thing about baseball is whatever happens one day, you get a chance to redeem yourself the next day.”
PLANS
Bear Stadium had an artificial surface installed on the infield and out areas this year plus a new scoreboard.
Gum has bigger plays that include bleachers and deck areas to surround the field with exclusive areas for families and students plus a play area for children. “We are in the process of creating a great atmosphere for baseball for any type of fan or group,” he said.
RECRUITING PHILOSOPHY
Gum is not shy about competing with anyone in recruiting for an in-state athlete. He said the Bears got two of three in-state recruits they wanted this year. The other went to the Razorbacks.
“But we made the University of Arkansas wait for awhile and they are not used to doing that,” Gum said. “We going after the same kids they are. They (the Razorback staff) worked hard but we hope to make it where they have to work harder on Arkansas recruits.”
