Now that a very good Fall World Series and fall season has concluded, time to turn toward the Spring!

CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears have added another Southeastern Conference foe to their 2013 schedule.

The Bears will play at Vanderbilt in a single game on Feb. 20. UCA already had a three-game series at Mississippi State set for March 8-10 in Starkville, Miss.

The Bears’ 2013 schedule includes a game at Big 12 Oklahoma State on March 26, three games at Southern Miss (March 15-17) and games against in-state rivals Arkansas State (April 10, Jonesboro), Arkansas-Pine Bluff (March 12, Conway; March 19, Pine Bluff) and Arkansas-Little Rock (April 2, Conway; May 7, Little Rock).

“The SEC and the Big 12 are the top baseball conferences in the country,’ said UCA head coach Allen Gum. “These schools have tremendous baseball players and tremendous athletes. Playing these guys allows us to compete at the highest level, it allows us to see what type of players we have to have for our program and the depth we need to compete at that level.

“But it also shows our players that we can play with anybody in the country when we play good, fundamental baseball.’

UCA beat Mississippi State 2-1 last season, and lost 2-1 at Ole Miss and 4-2 at perennial powerhouse Texas...

CONWAY, Ark. _ The Black Team swept the Purple Team at the University of Central Arkansas’ Fall World Series, winning three straight games last week. The coaches decided to play three more games, with the Purple gaining the upperhand the second time around.

All in all, UCA head coach Allen Gum said he liked what he saw from his starting pitchers, returning position players and some of the newcomers.

“All six starting pitchers we put out there threw extremely well,’ said Gum, in his third season at UCA. “The starting pitching was really good, that was really the highlight of the whole week.

“(Senior) Caleb McClanahan was really good in the first game. He looked like a No. 1 Friday starter. Both starters, Ethan McKinzie and Bryce Biggerstaff, did some good things in Game 2. Freshman Taylor Wallace from Little Rock Catholic came in and got the save.

“And (senior) John Kordsmeier, coming out the bullpen, both times looked really good. (Jeffery) Enloe threw well. He’s a different guy this fall.’...

One thing I noticed this Fall, besides the good weather and very good crowds that came out (esp last Saturday for Family Day) was the depth and competition-level that is being developed throughout the entire roster now. If they can now continue to carry the momentum over into the Spring, last year will hopefully be just the tip of the iceberg. But it's amazing how far this program has come in the last 2+ years.
