4/6/14 vs SELA

SELA 7-12-1 (7-5/20-12)
UCA 4-11-2 (6-6/17-12)

McClain gets roughed up pretty good with 7 runs in 7 innings.....8 Ks but 10 hits...Gilmour went a solid two scoreless in relief.....Pinney was 3/4 with a rbi.....Dowdle was 2/4 with a triple but left on base....

I'm confused as to why the pitcher got under a pop up and the third base guy ran over and called him off of it only to proceed to drop it. Wtf? Explain?

I'd have to see where the pop up was on the field, but pretty frequently the pitcher defers to the rest of the infield on balls in play.

As far as I know there's no reason to drop a fly ball.

I know it's time to move on. But the link to this article was part of a Google alert I received a few minutes ago. I couldn't believe what I was reading. So I commented. And now I'm sharing.

Bearcountry, a pitcher would also be back peddling over the mound if the ball starts to drift.

Makes sense. He looked to be right under it but that was my view from the stands so I could have had a bad angle. The ball landed between home plate and the mound so it looked like he had the best shot at it.Thanks

I think i can see both viewpoints. If it is a game recap then the fight has really nothing to do with the actual game itself and there is no point in ranting about it when the point of the article is strictly about baseball. But it's still a huge story that needed to be covered.

The ironic thing is the brawl probably got UCA baseball more air time in the state than playing in the NCAA tournament did last year

Trey..thanks for the very good response...any bets on whether Fires will read?

Having been a middle infielder I can attest that pop ups can be a bugger to catch any where around the mound...our pitchers were told to let us handle as we, in theory, had a better approach angle..I always suspected it was really because most pitchers spend so little time in fielding practice they were more likely to fall as well as miss the ball.....if it was cloudy and windy that is a prescription for disaster on a pop up near the mound....

Congrats to Caudle....

I doubt he responds, whether he sees it or not. We'll never know.
Either way, I feel better for having commented.

Good retort Trey.

Personally, I don't see what all the hullabaloo is all about. So tempers flared a little bit. Four batters hit, one got hit twice. Sounds as if the umps are somewhat responsible for what happened.

I'm sure the people that witnessed the brush up didn't go home and have nightmares that night. If they didn't, then I don't see where the altercation had any lasting effect on anyone outside the game.
