Niners mail call: Searching for diamonds

Furthermore, they could wait a round or two and take Jacob Ford, a 6-4, 250-pound "tweener" end/linebacker from Central Arkansas who recorded 15 sacks and 32 tackles for a loss in his final two seasons in college and be just as well off. He's like a poor man's Manny Lawson.

Despite being used only as a pass rusher in college, Ford showed in the Insta Juice All-Star Classic that he is athletic enough to make the switch to linebacker, and he even intercepted a pass during the game.

The main concerns about Ford are his lack of experience and his lack of "elite" strength (he bench-pressed 19 reps of 225 pounds at the combine while Robinson did 27 reps), but with his speed (4.65 40), he is well worth a fifth-round selection. With the right coaching, he could turn into a terror off the edge for the 49ers.

thanks for the info, charlie. Ford has the raw skills to make it. i agree with that author; with the right coaching, he could be a terror.

does this mean i'll have to root for the Niners if they pick him up, though?

Nope, just for Jacob.

If he gets picked in the fifth round, that will be pretty remarkable for him. I guess I should have asked for his autograph during last season.

Link below for some scouting report info on Jacob:

http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/rankings/de.html

As a simple fan, I am a bit dismayed with Fairooz extremely low rankings. I have seen him and Marcus Monk play and I would say Fairooz would not be overwhelmed. Monk is pretty quick and has great hands. Fairooz's speed is deceiving due to his height and he can both leap with his height and has great concentration to catch balls on curls over the middle. He caught some balls over the middle against SHS that were masterpieces of concentration. Sort of like someone who does not do well on ACT test but leads the class anyway. Maybe someone will give him a shot.

Jacob is a real possibility to surprise folks with his speed and game smarts.

Scout.com ranks Jacob Ford as 2 stars and 20th among all DEs.
Only Bear ranked. See info at:

Aaron Nolan from KARK (that's Ch. 4 in Little Rock) was out at the scrimmage for a bit at the beginning today, and he interviewed Conque and Jacob in addition to shooting a bit of the action. Should probably be something on at 10 for those interested.

16 and 11 may have footage as well, but I didn't see them conduct any interview.

Are they planning to come out for the final scrimmage also?

Matt Dougherty of The Sports Network ranks Ford at #20 of FCS players in the draft. See article at:

I was watching channel 41 and they were doing a draft preview 10 ten for each position. Jacob was in the top 10 and considered by the expert to be one of the best in small college ball. They even mentioned his dad wrote "Hound Dog" for Elvis. A total of about 30 seconds of Ford coverage. He even said there is a lot of excitement for Central Arkansas because of Ford!

....Way to go Jacob!

New info on Jacob:

At the scrimmage Aaron called Jacob and Jacob said he was on his way to Memphis. Here's something out of KFFL in Tennessee:

Titans | Ford visits
Sun, 22 Apr 2007 12:17:06 -0700

Terry McCormick, of the Nashville City Paper, reports the Tennessee Titans met with Central Arkansas DE Jacob Ford.

No story to follow, but just a tasty bit of info...mmmm..melt in your mouths...
