Tiner's legacy embedded in UCA football

By DAVID GRIMES
Special to The Log Cabin

(EDITOR'S NOTE: This is another in a series by Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame director David Grimes about inductees into the hall with Faulkner County connections):

Bobby Tiner was inducted into the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame in 1990 along with Bennie Ellender, Henry Moore, Leota Barham, Lowell "Hoss" Manning and Hubert "Geese" Ausbie.

A multi-sport star out of Morrilton, Tiner enrolled at Arkansas State Teachers College, now UCA. He left the school as one of the all-time great athletes in Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference history. Tiner was a dual-threat quarterback who could both run and pass. Playing for Bears' head coach Frank Koon, Tiner made first-team All-AIC as a freshman in 1963, but missed the following season...

Sorry that I never got to see him play. Not quite sure I was born yet!

I didn't get to see him either, but I've be told he may have been the VERY best to wear the Bear purple and Gray.

Tiner's time was before I was old enough to remember any games, but I remember people talking about him.

My buddies that work out with me with the 12 oz. weights say he was something to watch back in the days. Several have said probably one of the best all-around athletes to ever grace the athletic field, not to mention the fact that he is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet.

Stories from guys who played with Tiner said he would waive off calls from the sideline and call plays like...""Randy go down 10 and do ab utton hook in and Billy do a fly left ..somebody block ....on 2".....

Probably a bunch of bull but a current Arkansas HS coach who played against Tiner as a DB said Bears were unpredictable with Tiner at QB..."just like he drew plays in the dirt"....

There is a classic aerial photo of the Bears v OBU at Estes showing the Bears at line of scrimmage facing south with Tiner at QB...

I always thought he played like Fran Tarkenton...not fast...not quick...too short.....but great instincts ...could scramble like crazy and and could launch the ball downfield....

AICC football in those days were great...I saw a State Teachers (that's us for you infants) v A&M (now UAM) in that time and it was a whale of a game....very well coached...innovative offenses and hard hitting defenses....

The UCA Archives no doubt has some great photos....

As I recall, Tiner also played QB for the Arkansas Diamonds....
