BOMAR GETS INVITE

Sam Houston State quarterback Rhett Bomar has accepted an invitation to the play in the 2009 East-West Shrine All-Star football game.

Bomar, who was the starting quarterback at Oklahoma before being dismissed in 2006 after accepting money from a car dealership for hours he actually did not work, has started for Sam Houston State the past two seasons.

The 6-2½, 215 pound signal-caller has completed 59.6 percent of his passes this season for the Bearcats.

Entering Saturday’s game against Northwestern State, Bomar has completed 109 of his 183 passes for 1,476 yards, 15 touchdowns and only five pass interceptions.

The very athletic quarterback has also rushed for 107 yards and scored three rushing touchdowns. Bomar, who is projected as a fourth or fifth round pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, will go up against Nicholls State on Nov. 8.

As good as Bomar is, he is considered the second best pro prospect at quarterback in the Southland Conference. Central Arkansas quarterback Nathan Brown is considered the best senior offensive pro prospect in the Southland Conference and projected as a third round choice.

NFL Analysts Mike Detiller lives in Raceland.

Early Two-Round Mock for 2009 NFL Draft

No idea who this guy is, but he's a big fan of Nathan's (and it think a Vikings fan?). I think anyone can post articles on this site, so take it for what it's worth. But he only has a comment by one player's name - Nathan Brown...

Second round
8. Minnesota Vikings: Nathan Brown, QB
(Surprising pick, but Nathan Brown has 21 touchdowns and one interception this season, including a three-touchdown performance against Tulsa. He's perfect for the West Coast Offense, too.)

Wow. Have to get our boy back healthy first though so he can help us get a ring and get himself a Peyton Award. Those two things only increase his draft status.

NFL Draft 2009: Risers And Sliders

Quote:
Notes

• The poor play of the senior quarterbacks this season will open the doors of opportunity for a few small school passers, including Rhett Bomar of Sam Houston State and Nathan Brown of Central Arkansas the likely benefactors. Bomar, who began his college career with Oklahoma before transferring to SHSU, has been impressive the past two seasons and is on pace to top the 3,000-yard passing mark this year. Brown has thrown 23 touchdown passes and just a single interception this year. Both are likely to receive the coveted invitation to participate in the Senior Bowl next January. The last Sam Houston State player to be invited to Mobile, Alabama for the Senior Bowl? Quarterback Josh McCown, a seven-year veteran of the NFL.

Spread offenses skew quarterback scouting
McShay

By Todd McShay

Insider

Variations of the spread offense have rolled like wildfire through the college football landscape in recent years. As a result, teams across the country are moving toward smaller, more athletic quarterbacks. It's those triggermen who typically face the most difficult transition to the NFL, for several reasons: The reads are more complex, the passing windows are tighter, the linemen are taller and the line of scrimmage is more congested. And though NFL scouts value athleticism, they don't value it nearly as much as accuracy and decision-making skills.

What's the relevance? Well, from the early look of things, spread offenses could affect the 2009 quarterback draft class more dramatically than any before it -- an unpleasant trend for many NFL teams.

The top two senior quarterback prospects -- Clemson's Cullen Harper and Purdue's Curtis Painter -- operate primarily out of the shotgun in passer-friendly spread systems. Height isn't an issue for either player, but the adjustment to taking snaps under center (in addition to the aforementioned hurdles) will increase their learning curves.

West Virginia's Pat White, arguably college football's best senior passer, will be asked to switch positions in the NFL. Others such as Missouri's Chase Daniel and Texas A&M's Stephen McGee will face enormous challenges when transitioning to pro-style offenses at the next level.

A trickle-down effect can be seen among the underclassmen, beginning with Florida's Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Tim Tebow. Whether it's in April of '09 or '10, a great debate regarding Tebow's pro prospects seems inevitable. The player Tebow will be most closely compared to within draft circles is Alex Smith (49ers), who played for coach Urban Meyer and coordinator Dan Mullen at Utah. Though Tebow is bigger, stronger and more athletic, Smith showed superior coverage reads and overall passing skills at the same point in his career. And Tebow's bruising running style and heavy rushing load likely will hurt his cause.

All those variables led us to grade Georgia's Matt Stafford slightly higher among underclassmen quarterback prospects at this point. Tebow has clearly outplayed his SEC East counterpart the last two seasons, but Stafford plays in a scheme that more closely resembles a pro-style offense and possesses prototypical NFL quarterback tools, including a rifle arm.

Looking for sleepers? There may not be a first-rounder among the FCS ranks (as Delaware's Joe Flacco was in '08), but Central Arkansas' Nathan Brown and Sam Houston State's Rhett Bomar (a former Oklahoma Sooner who transferred in 2007) are small-school signal-callers who currently rate as potential late Day 1 or Day 2 picks in '09.

As a reminder, these players are ranked for NFL draft purposes. If these rankings were college football-driven, all classes would be combined and Tebow would own the top spot.
