The Contender
Nathan Brown, Central Arkansas (6-2, 217)
NFL Player Comparison: Tyler Thigpen
The Good…
Brown is a natural athlete with good mobility and awareness in the pocket. Does a good job buying time and side-stepping pressure. He’s a very accurate passer on short and intermediate throws and displays the anticipation skills to consistently throw receivers open. Showcased impressive timing at the Senior Bowl and was the only QB with the ability to consistently throw the deep out with zip or accuracy. Is a very confident kid who trusts his release and strides into every throw. A natural leader with good character; possesses the type of demeanor you want in the huddle.
The Bad…
Brown is a bit undersized for the QB position, and his sidearm release doesn’t help his cause. He does a nice job finding throwing lanes but at times doesn’t set his feet; his accuracy will suffer because of it. He doesn’t have a naturally strong arm, and when he tries to overthrow, the ball takes off on him and has a tendency to sail. Is still learning to read defenses, and at times the game looks to be moving a bit faster than he is.
The Breakdown…
Sure, Brown is undersized, lacks great arm strength and has a sidearm release, but for some reason he’s an intriguing quarterback prospect to me. Brown possesses a confident swagger and flashes NFL ability although he is still inconsistent as a passer and needs to develop from a mental standpoint. However, his confident throwing motion, accuracy underneath and timing on all levels of the field really jump out at me. Don’t expect him to see the field anytime soon. He’s the type of development prospect NFL teams love to stash away and bring along slowly. In some ways, he could have a path similar to Chiefs QB Tyler Thigpen at the next level.
