Coach had a terrific coaching career and was instrumental in getting Pine Bluff's program really going that became dominant from the mid 70s under his chief assistant after Coach went to A-State. Among the international elite athletes he coached at A-State were Earl Bell in the PV and Al Joyner in the horizontal jumps...….each 1984 Olympic medalists. I was a distance runner for the Zebras under Coach and will always remember his tireless enthusiasm for the sport and his athletes. He was famous for his sayings such as "That ain't no high cotton for a high stepper" and on a cold, windy, rainy, ugly day "It's 70 degrees and the sun is shining somewhere". He played baseball and ran track in the early 60s at UCA at a time the Bears were really good in a really good track and field conference....one of his teammates and good friend turned out to be one of the elite track and field starters in the US having started many, many top level championship meets at the highest NCAA level. Coach came from and was part of a very good era.

"During his tenure at ASU Guy was privileged to coach 6 Olympians, one world record holder, 2 American record holders and 3 Olympic Medal winners. Throughout his career, Guy coached 34 All-Americans. He worked with the Olympic Development Committee as pole vault and high jump chairman and was selected to coach in 5 international track meets including the first Goodwill Games in Moscow, Russia."

Arkansas State University athletes are mourning the death of Guy Ward Kochel Jr., 78, who coached ASU’s track and field program from 1972-89, including Olympian Earl Bell.

KAIT, Ch. 8, posted the note it got from Bell:
“Coach Kochel was a great role model, mentor, & friend. He was a great coach, leader, and teacher. I was very lucky to have him in my life. We had a lot of good times and success together, but he made sure there was some learning going on, and he ALWAYS made sure you stayed humble. My thoughts and prayers are with Sue and his family.”

The ASU Indians won 10 conference championships under Kochel, KAIT reported. Kochel coached 7 Olympians, including Al Joyner along with Bell.

According to the Encyclopedia of Arkansas, Kochel was born in Reydell in Jefferson County. He played baseball and ran track for the University of Central Arkansas, and served as pole vault and high-jump chairman for the USA Olympic team from 1985-88. After retiring from ASU after 17 years, Kochel went to work for Merrill Lynch in Jonesboro, and later became pastor at First Baptist Church of Jonesboro.

In 2004, Guy became pastor of Huntington Church in Jonesboro where he served for 14 years. He lived an exciting life before this time but his years at Huntington were the best.
