Probably not many realize but today was an historic day in Arkansas sports as all Arkansas D1 schools participated in the same team scored indoor track meet that was not a national or regional NCAA meet. This came about by the UAF change in policy. The meet was held at the fabulous Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville complete with a brand new surface (UAF hosts both the SEC and NCAA D1 indoors in a few weeks).

Team scores are as follows:

Men:
159, UAF
104, OU
95, A-State
54, UCA
33, UALR
26, Harding
25, UAPB

Women:
228, UAF
119, OU
60.33, A-State
31, Harding
24, UAPB
24, UCA
9.66, UALR

Early meets such as this are a time to let athletes see where they are in their training vs good competition. On the other hand, athletes will be held out if they have much of any injury as it is not worth making that worse. Team scores really mean nothing in T&F until championship meets and rivalry meets (say when UAF and Texas hold a two team meet). The focus is on getting athletes ready for conference meets and get qualifying marks for nationals where team scores are VERY important.

Looking through the results I see some nice marks by UCA as below:

W60m: Kendelle McCoy and Sierra Temple got 4th and 5th with times in the mid 7.70s....nice show

W3000: Tamara Reeves, 4th at 10:05....that is about 5:20 per mile pace

W60mh: FR Ayana Harris, 7th at 8.84....not in the money but respectable

M600: FR Terry Robinson, 3rd at 1:19.37...abut 1:50 for 800m....very respectable for FR

M800m: Jesse Applewhite, 1st at 1:54...pedestrian time but I do not find 200m split times so it may have been a tactical race...

M3000: Nores Maxmilian, 1st in 8:21.52; Jaron Hamilton, 3rd in 8:26.36; Thomas Cain, 5th in 8:30.....Nores' time is about 8:55 for two miles which is probably a school record.....especially indoor...that is 4:27 per mile pace....Hamilton about 9 minutes 2 mile pace....all solid times...as an old 2 mile specialists I am really excited to see our guys get to 9 and under pace....

Full results at link below....

https://www.flashresults.com/2021_Meets ... esults.pdf

UAF's men apparently held out some of their front line but the women has most of their team involved.....the UAF women are the creme de la creme of the SEC and NCAA and are really very strong..........best XC/T&F coaching staff anywhere......UAF men solid as well overall.....

SLC Indoor Track and Field Championships
Crossplex, Birmingham, AL

Both teams had a respectable finish...SugarBears in 4th and Bears in 6th. Overall Top 3 teams at bottom.

M800: FR Terry Robinson took 2nd in a very solid 1:51.20 and JR Jesse Applewhite was 3rd in 1:52...

M5000: SO Maximilian Nores took 5th in a very good 14:24 which is sub-14 for 3 miles (have to check our records books for that) and about 4:37 per mile.

MDMR: Bears team of Jaron Hamilton, Shamal Sullivan, Terry Robinson and Nores won in 10:00.....not going to get them to nationals (probably take about 9:48 or better) but still one of our better all time marks in this event.....the relay starts with 1200m followed by 400m followed by 800m and ending with 1600m...

MHeptathlon: JR Tim Dresselhaus was 6th...tough event....surviving all events is not a given

W60: SO Sierra Temple was 4th in 7.66

W400: SR Tyler Rose won her prelim heat and took 2nd overall in 56.28

WMile: SO Tamara Reeves took 2nd in 4:56

W3000: SO Tamara Reeves was 4th in 9:58...about 5:18 per mile

W60h: SO Ayana Harris was 5th in 8.82

WDMR: Team of Anna Bommes, Tamera Rhode, Zailey Chaffin and Tamara Reeves took 4th

WLJ: SR Taylor Coleman took 4th

WTJ: SR Taylor Coleman was 4th

WPentathlon: FR Natalie Louw was 5th..same as for the heptathlon, a tough event....excellent for a FR

Worth mention is that JR Shea Foster of Southeastern won the MMile in 4:03, the M3000 in 8:01 and the M5000m in 13:40...these are VERY good times and probably qualified him for nationals at Fayetteville in one if not two.

Men's:
SFA - 105
Southeastern - 100
HBU - 77.5

UCA 6th with 56 points.

Women's:
ACU - 107
Northwestern - 103
SFA - 92

UCA was 4th at 52

John McDonnell Invitational @ Fayetteville

UCA fans would have been very pleased with how our teams competed at Fayetteville this past weekend. The meet included teams from Arkansas State, UCA, UAPB, Wichita State, Tulsa, Kansas among a few others plus some very good unattached athletes.......the UCA Sports writeup at links below has a good recap...this was the first year for the in-state school competition and it was a very good outing by each team.....eveyone went home with some bragging rights....

https://ucasports.com/news/2021/4/25/womens-track-and-field-harris-jewell-break-records-on-day-two-in-fayetteville.aspx

https://ucasports.com/news/2021/4/24/mens-track-and-field-bears-break-three-program-records-on-day-one-of-john-mcdonnell-invitational.aspx

UCA won four events.....Zach Jewell thrilled the crowd with a win in the 200m at 20.84 and even better on Sunday with a 10.07 time for 100m for the win....the 100m time was close to a facility record (9.97) at a track that has hosted SEC outdoors, many SEC and Big 12 teams, NCAA Regionals and NCAA championships.....Jewell was on fire...both times are UCA school records...he also anchored a 4x100m relay team that clocked a respectable 40.71.....FR TJ Robinson won the men's 800m running from the "slow heat"....a tactical race with a furious last 300m for a 1:50.33 time...if had been seeded in the "fast heat" it is almost a certainty that he and the top runner sin the fast heat would have had to run faster...still a very solid time and win....the Bears won the 4x400m relay in 3:10 which is good for an early meet (Joshua Armstead, Tristan LaVan, TJ Robinson, and Ryan Yarde) ....FYI this is 47.5 seconds per 400m average....solid time...Arkansas did not field a team in that event...too bad as the are always solid in 4x4...LaVan got 6th in the open 400m race in 47.17....

Something like 55 personal bests were set by Bears and SugarBears......a clear result of going against very good competition on a warmer (but windy) day on a very good track....

Jaron Hamilton became the first Bear to run the 3000m steeplechase in less than 9 minutes as he finished in 8:59... Tamara Reeves ran a very nice 5000m race and lowered her PR and school year to 16:50...very good time for a freshman...Malik Beasley set a school mark in the hammer throw at 157'1"....

Ayana Harris ran a terrific race in the 100m hurdles to set a PR and school record in 13.53....this was a quite strong event and she did not make the finals of the event....

While not a school record, Ajah Criner looked to be getting back into good form with a 11.52 (PR) clocking for 2nd in the open 100m ...

Taylor Coleman showed her effort last week at >40' in the women's triple jump was no fluke as she took 3rd in 40'3.5"...Jaden Harris took 6th in the men's long jump at a PR and very solid 24'5" mark....

As an old track guy who well remembers Bears' greats from AIC days such as Fred Jackson, David Johnston, Nate Krig, Richard Martin, Ricky Richardson and Mark Segovis (among many others), it was good to see the high level of talent in the purple uniforms who competed at a very high level in many events....

By the way, this is a smaller meet but usually has strong performances....one facility records was set by an A-State runner in the men's 3000m steeplechase at 8:38 for the NCAA D1 season best time so far and a meet record set by Wichita State runner who ran 9:58 in the women's steeplechase that will also rank high in D1 this week.....she put on an impressive sprint to separate from the Alabama runner ....Wichita State men had 3 runners post times of 3:45 or better in the men's 1500m...this is a 4 minute mile or better....excellent race....Bears Jared Hamilton and Max Nores ran a solid 3:52 (about 4:07 for the mile)....a Tulsa runner won the men's 5000m in a fabulous time of 13:28 for a meet and facility record which will ran very high in D1 this week....two Alabama women demolished the meet and facility record with the 1st place timing a strong 15:17 (right at 5 minutes per mile)....

This was no pick up meet........

I would think A-State and UAPB also had lots of PRs ...as a track fan I thought this instate competition was a big success....Arkansas did not run all their top line in their primary event but they had to compete to win events...they won their fair share as you would expect....Arkansas women are ranked #2 in D1 and the men #12...

Go Bears and SugarBears!!

Well deserved recognition on and off the track..two of our very best sprinters.....Go Bears and SugarBears!!

Bears Earn USTFCCCA All-Academic Team Honors
NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced its yearly All-Academic Athletes and All-Academic Teams on Thursday. The Central Arkansas men's and women's track & field teams both earned the team award, while Ajah Criner and Zachary Jewell collected individual recognition for the third time in their careers.

Criner, a senior from Hope, Arkansas, earned her third USTFCCCA All-Academic Athlete selection. She qualified for the NCAA West Prelims in the 100m and 200m. She holds the UCA record in the 200m and is a member of the 4x400m relay team that holds the best time in program history for indoor. Outdoor, she finished the season 33rd overall in the 100m, which qualified her for the USTFCCCA honor. She has been outstanding in the classroom with a 3.76 GPA in the pursuit of a degree in athletic training.

Jewell, a senior from Mena, Arkansas, tallied his third USTFCCCA All-Academic accolade. He is a Second-Team All-American in the 100m as he placed 16th at the NCAA Championships. He qualified for the NCAA West Prelims in the 100m and 200m. He set the UCA record in the 100m and 200m this season. He posted the fourth-best time in the West Region with a 10.07 in the 100m. He has compiled a perfect 4.0 GPA in the pursuit of a Master of Geo. Info Systems.

In order for a student-athlete to be eligible for All-Academic honors, they must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.25 on a 4.0 scale, including the most recent grading period, certifiable by either NCAA Faculty Rep or NCAA Compliance Coordinator or Registrar's Office. Institutions utilizing a different GPA scale must convert the GPA to a 4.0 scale using the standard conversion method. The student-athlete must have completed at least two (2) semesters or three (3) quarters at the nominating institution. Athletic criteria for the award, for the indoor season, must have finished the season ranked in the top 96 in any championship individual event, or in the top 48 in any championship relay event, for the most recent indoor season, certifiable by their place on final season performance lists on TFRRS for Indoor Track and Field (including performances achieved outside the qualifying window during the indoor season). For the outdoor season: must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships (the Preliminary Championship Competition and/or the Final Championship Competition) or for the multi-events, must have finished the season ranked in the top 48 in the East or top 48 in the West for the most recent outdoor season, certifiable by their place on the NCAA Division I descending order lists on TFRRS for Outdoor Track and Field.

This is the fifth-consecutive year that both the men's and women's teams achieved USTFCCCA All-Academic Team status. The women led the way for the Bears with a combined 3.42 GPA, while the men posted a 3.01 team GPA.

In order to meet the criteria for being named an All-Academic Team a team must have a cumulative GPA (not 2018-19 academic year, not semester) for all student-athletes on the institution's NCAA Squad List for Indoor and/or Outdoor Track and Field must be 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale, including the most recent grading period, certifiable by either NCAA faculty rep or NCAA compliance coordinator or registrar's office.
