I thought last year we made a huge step when we won 24 games. I believe this year, we will win over 30 games because we have more depth in a lot of areas. We have more pitching, more defense, more offense, more bench. Softball is growing in leaps and bounds and I believe they will do so well. The season kicks off in Mobile, Alabama a week from Friday. Home opener is February 17th against UAPB. Oh and get a chance to see our new and improved softball field. It looks great.

What type of improvements did they make to the field?

They have built brick around the field. Used to be fenced around. They moved the tarp to the third base side. The batting cages have a new roof so there won't be a problem on windy days. Plus the bullpens are brand new as well.

UCA SOFTBALL OPENS SEASON AT MARDI GRAS INVITATIONAL

MOBILE, Ala - The University of Central Arkansas softball team will open the 2010 season this weekend at the Mardi Gras Invitational hosted by South Alabama. The Bears will take on Lipscomb on Friday at 2 p.m., Western Kentucky on Saturday at 2 p.m., South Alabama on Saturday at 7 p.m. and Samford on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. All games will be played at Jaguar Field.

The Bears return 11 players from last year's squad that went 24-31 in head coach David Kuhn's first season. This was a huge improvement over the previous season when UCA went 6-43. Added to that nucleus is a group of nine talented newcomers, providing needed depth.

Congrats to the ladies! I am happy for the them. A reminder, the softball team opens the home portion of their season this Wednesday at 2 with a doubleheader against UAPB. This is the only time they are home this month, so if you have some extra time, please join us. The weather should be pretty nice for Wednesday, in the 50s. (I hope, keep your fingers crossed). See ya there!
