K-State Finishes in Second

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men’s golf team took second place, with a pair of Wildcat freshmen finishing in the top-three individually, following the final round of the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate Tuesday afternoon at the par 72, 7,525-yard Colbert Hills Golf Course.
The Wildcats started the day in a tie for second with UMKC, and they were able to pull ahead by four strokes in the tournament’s final round to gain sole possession of second with a 34-over par 898.
Central Arkansas was able to hold off K-State, carding a 25-over par 889 to take home first-place honors.“I wish it would have been better,” said head coach Tim Norris. “The guys were in contention going into the last round, and we came up just a little bit short.
Central Arkansas is a good team. I knew when I invited them that they would be great competition. They just did a little bit better than we did this week.”Freshman Jack Watson, who was competing as an individual, finished second, firing an even-par 72 on his final round to finish at 2-under 214. Fellow freshman Thomas Birdsey finished just one shot back of Watson at 1-under par 215 to grab third place, marking his second straight top-15 finish.
Senior Jason Schulte also notched a top-10 finish, carding a 9-over par 225 to place 10th. Sophomore Ben Juffer finished in a tie for 12th for the second straight week, ending the tournament at 10-over par. Junior Kyle Smell and sophomore Curtis Yonke rounded out the K-State team lineup as both finished in a tie for 35th at 21-over par 237.
“We are a work in progress, but this tournament shows that we have some good young guys that I think are going to be good for a long time,” Norris said. “I don’t think they have played their best golf possible by any means. It is a positive, but we would have liked to win. That never gets old.”
In addition to Watson, four other Wildcats also competed as individuals. Freshman David Klaudt cracked the top-15 with his tie for 15th at 14-over par 230. Senior Ross Geubelle and sophomore Chase Chamberlin both finished in a tie for 30th at 19-over, while freshman Tyler Norris finished in 45th.
“The freshmen have really picked right up here and shown a lot of progress and growth, so that’s the good side,” Norris said. “The bad side is that some of our veterans are struggling a little bit, but that is the nature of golf. It is a game of peaks and valleys. Hopefully your peaks last longer than your valleys and your valleys are not very low. “
Next action for the Wildcats comes when K-State travels to Akron, Ohio, to compete in the Firestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club, October 11-12.
