BEARS FINISH UP SOFTBALL SIGNING CLASS

SOFTBALL ADDS TWO MORE TO SIGNING CLASS

Quote:
University of Central Arkansas softball coach David Kuhn added the final two student-athletes to his seven-member signing class on Tuesday. Kaytie Spencer of Purcell, Okla. and Taylor Barclay of Henderson, Tenn. joins Tory Fitch, Tiffany Roby, Ashley Boswell, Cicely New and Lissa Avitia as incoming Bears for the 2011-12 academic year.

Spencer, a catcher, was an all-state selection for Purcell High School last year. She hit .451 with 46 hits, 38 runs batted in, 18 doubles and five home runs in 2010. Spencer was the conference Defensive Player of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year and MVP. She made all-conference twice and was an all-region selection once. Spencer played for the Tulsa Elite Gold during the summer.

"Kaytie is an offensive and defensive threat," said Kuhn. "She is very good defensive catcher with a strong arm. She can hit for average and has good gap-to-gap power."

Barclay was a Tennessee Sportswriters Association All-State selection for University School of Jackson last season. She went 18-4 with a 0.95 earned run average and 215 strikeouts. Barclay helped her team to a TSSAA Division IIA state title and was named the state MVP. She also hit .396 with nine home runs. Barclay was also named all-district, region MVP and Jackson Sun All-West Tennessee First Team.

"Taylor throws the ball really hard and has great control," Kuhn said. "She is a great addition to our team at UCA."

CONWAY, Ark. - University of Central Arkansas softball head coach David Kuhn signed two more student-athletes who will join the Bears for the 2011-12 school year. Cicely New of Greenbrier, Ark. and Lissa Avitia of Cypress, Calif. moves Kuhn's class up to five.

New, a pitcher, was the 2010 Arkansas MVP in Class 5A as a junior. She is a three-time all-conference selection and was named the 2010 Diamond Ice Player of the Year. She helped the Lady Panthers to a 5A state title last season. In 2010, New went 22-2 with a 0.73 earned run average and struck out 224 in 136 innings. She recorded two no-hitters and also hit .351 with three homers and 18 RBI.

"Cicely is one of the top pitchers in the state," said Kuhn. "She has great velocity and great movement on her pitches. I am really excited about her as an addition to our pitching staff."

Avitia, a shortstop, was the 2010 Defensive MVP for Pacifica High School. She hit .643 with 18 hits, seven runs, 10 RBI, four doubles and three walks as a junior. She was named all-conference and helped PHS to a conference title in 2010.

"Lissa has good range, soft hands and a strong arm with a quick release," said Kuhn. "She is a tremendous softball player that has great skills."
