FRISCO, Texas - Central Arkansas junior first baseman Kasey Britt has been named the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week and UT Arlington freshman right-hander Callie Collins has been named the Southland Pitcher of the Week by vote of the league's sports information directors the league office announced Tuesday. Collins award marks the third by a Maverick in two weeks.
A native of Florence, Miss., Britt was named to the Baylor QTI Powers Invitational All-Tournament Team after hitting .625 with a 1.125 slugging percentage. She had two or more hits in each of the final four games. Britt hit a solo home run for the only run of the game in the Bears' 1-0 win over #23 Houston. She also recorded five doubles on the weekend and was perfect in the field on 16 chances while playing first base, center field and left field.
Collins receives her second consecutive pitcher of the week honor. She improved to 5-1 on the mound and went 3-0 in the UTA Classic. Collins, a true freshman, recorded a pair of wins against Centenary and a win against Creighton. She finished the tournament with a 0.74 ERA in 19 innings pitched and recorded 34 strikeouts. Collins also held her opponents to a .183 batting average. She recorded a season-high 15 strikeouts against Centenary and followed that performance with 12 strikeouts against Creighton.
This week's hitter honorable mentions are McNeese State senior shortstop Molly Guidry, Northwestern State sophomore designated player Kylie Roos, Southeastern Louisiana sophomore outfielder Kelsey Nichols and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi junior outfielder Hannah Schwarz. Pitching honorable mentions are Central Arkansas sophomore Kelsey Armstrong, Roos, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi junior Vianca Pesina and Texas State sophomore Anne Marie Taylor. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland women's basketball sports information directors.
