Two Conway High pole vaulters took the first strides Tuesday toward college careers.
Austin Kotch signed with Arkansas State University and
Hunter Moix signed with the University of Central Arkansas at a double ceremony at the high school.
“When they started vaulting in high school three years ago, we knew they were special, but we didn’t know how special they really were,” CHS track coach Johnny Kennedy said. “They got to where they are today because of their work ethic. It’s a technique event that requires a lot of work.”
Kennedy said the team will also miss their leadership next year.
“You can count on that they are going to score every meet,” he said. “Neither are real vocal in their leadership. But you look out there every day and they’re working and working hard.
“I had a very difficult job. I had to make sure the bus was running and the poles were on the bus.”

Kotch was 3rd at 7A State Indoor at 14 feet while Moix was 5th at 13' 6"...with reasonable progression Moix could get to 15' 6 or better which would likely score good points in Southland meet. UCA Sophomore Daniel Reese vaulted 15' 11 this past winter for 4th at SLC Indoor.
I assume Hunter is a cousin to the "Moix basketball twins" from Rogers a few years back (Kyle and Kane) who were actually not twins but it seemed everyone thought so and who dropped basketball and at least one became an entertaining DJ on KUCA but that is another story.
