McCollum's Column: Some morsels concerning UCA softball and baseballQuote:
THE BIG PICTURE
Kuhn, who runs a disciplined program based on faith, family, school and softball, has six players batting .300 or better. More importantly, 18 of the 21 players on the Bears’ roster have grade-point averages of 3.0 or greater. “These are girls who compete on and off the field,” he said. “We recruit great people with great parents.”
HICKEY
The UCA team held a benefit game last weekend in which the players raised funs, through sales of various “Play for Trey” merchandise and pledges, for Trey Hickey, a Conway High student (a son of one of the coaches for Kuhn’s daughter on the Lady Cat softball team) who is battling his second bout with leukemia.
“Doing things like this puts things into perspective for us that there are more important things than softball,” Kuhn said.
RECRUITS
Kuhn is excited about two area recruits during the early signing period, Both of whom are considered among the top recruits in the state.
Pitcher Cicely New, who helps make Greenbrier a solid 5A state title contender, has a 65 mile-per-hour fastball. Tiffany Roby of North Little Rock, one of the favorites for the 7A title, is a solid position player.
