TWO BEARS NAMED TO COLLEGE SPORTS MADNESS PRESEASON ALL-SOUTHLAND TEAM; ROBY NAMED PRESEASON FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR

inShare.CONWAY, Ark. – The UCA Bears softball program has been recognized with their first honors of 2012 as Melanie Bryant and Kasey Britt were named to the Preseason College Sports Madness All-Southland First Team. Tiffany Roby was selected as the Preseason Freshman of the Year.

“This is a nice honor for Kasey and Mel based on the good seasons that they had last season and Tiffany has a great chance to be an outstanding student-athlete here at UCA,” said head coach David Kuhn.

Bryant, a junior catcher from Hernando, Miss. played and started in 55 games last season for the Bears. She was named the Southland’s Hitter of the Year, an Easton Fastpitch Third Team All-American and was a Southland All-Conference First Team selection. She led the conference with a .429 batting average while adding eight home runs and 37 RBI.

Britt, one of six seniors on this season’s squad, started all 56 games in 2011, hit .350 and led the Southland with 16 doubles. She finished second in the league with 44 RBI and was fourth with 10 homers. A Florence, Miss. native who boasted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage last season, was named to the NFCA All-South Region and All-Southland Conference First Teams.

Roby will begin her collegiate softball career this season after being a standout at North Little Rock High School where she led her team to back-to-back state titles and was a two-time All-State selection. She was also voted the team’s MVP during her senior season.

The Bears open the 2012 season in less than a month when they travel to Lorman, Miss. to take on Alcorn State on Feb. 9.
