UCA competes this coming weekend at A-State which also was at Kentucky then goes to Kansas and Southern Illinois before SLC. Both SLC Meet and NCAAs are in Birmingham, AL.
Make no mistake, it is always good to set school Top 10 marks. However, we have a ways to go to really be where we can get. The men's distrance medley relay (1200m-800m-400m-1600m...a really exciting race) time of 10:11 (our 2nd best ever) is 20 seconds off what it takes to get to NCAAs (not win, just get there). It will take a couple of 4:05 or better milers to knock a lot of time of time off...that is within our reach. Note that the NCAA D1 winners (Arkansas, Oregon, Stanford types) run about 9:30 which is simply awesome to watch. We can get to where we can regulary win SLC.
The high jump of 6'10+ is very solid and he has done 7+ last year. Probably takes 7'2+ to get to D1 nationals. Very competitive event.
The men's 800m really has to be under 1:50 to get into nationals and 1:47 to win.
The long jump probably takes 23.5+ (we jump about 22) and triple jump takes about 49+ (we are about 45).
The men's 4x400m takes 3:08 or so to get in.........that is reachable in good yearswith some good fortune.
The men's 400m is an elite event in NCAA........the USA just produces so many great quatermilers................ to get to NCAAs probably takes 46.5 at most.......the finals may be entirely 45.5 or better.........we do high 47s indoor.......
Fulani's high jump of 5'7 is on the cusp.........last year it took about 5'9 to get there.
Schools without indoor tracks will always have a steep hill to climb with indoor track..............the weather usually make it very hard to get speed work in for indoor..we are better outdoors traditionally as we have good weather and a very nice track and field faciility. Central Arkansas (the region as well as the school) needs a good indoor facility (does not have to be an elite facility). I hope we do not wait until someone in LR gets it done.
Nevertheless, our athletes compete hard and we keep getting better overall. For exmaple, we have had very good (sub 3:10 4x400m men's relays the past two years and we have 5-6 men distance runners who run well under 9 minutes for 3000m............I do not recalll us ever having that type depth...........
