Men opened season Friday night (8/31) at the Christian Brothers University Memphis Twilight.

Big news is that UCA's Marcus Schweikert was the overall college/university division winner over the 4 mile course in 20 minutes....that is 5 minutes per mile for the math challenged. While it is hard to compare XC races due to weather and courses, the UCA school 4 mile XC best time is about 19:20...I witnessed one of those a few years (decades) ago. Still, this is a great achievement by Marcus in hot weather. The Bears were 4th as a team behind Memphis, Mizzou and UT-Martin. I am assuming Mizzou did not run their top couple of runners as they are usually very good in distance. Nevertheless, this is a good first meet for the region. The race is run around a a very large soccer complex in southeast Memphis and ( I assume still) finishes with a lap in a nice soccer stadium. Weather is usually very warm and very humid even when run at dusk.

UCA's next two runners were 6th and 13th which is encouraging.

Arkansas State was 7th, Ole Miss 10th (almost assuredly did not run top runners), Houston Baptist 12th and UALR 13th.

Just for fun, scoring the meet as if only UCA, Memphis, Mizzou and Ole Miss were competing, then Memphis won with 45, MU at 49, UCA with 51 and Ole Miss with 101.

Next meet is the home meet at Lake Beaverfork this coming Saturday then the first real test at the Chile Pepper festival in Fayetteville on 9/22.....great course and great competition.

Go Bears!!!

Chile Pepper Festival, Fayetteville, 9/22/18

Note - This is a HUGE cross country meet over a really good course. Good experience for learning how to run in big crowds. I was there all day and course was pretty wet. especially around turns. SugarBear FR Gracie Hyde ran really well....she finished with a group of runners that had she been just a few steps faster would have been Top 16. Her time is about 5:45 per mile which is terrific on a wet and muddy course.

New SLC Men's XC champions!!!!!!

Been a long time since Bears last won XC championship........very proud of these guys............not be satisfied with just making a good showing......sounds like they were mentally tougher than the rest...meet 10/26/18 at Lake Charles.....Go Bears!!!

https://ucasports.com/news/2018/10/26/womens-cross-country-ucas-hyde-earns-freshman-honor-at-slc-championship.aspx

Without two top runners, SugarBears finished a respectable 6th.....that may have kept them from winning also looking at meet results......FR Gracie Hyde was 7th for 2nd team All-SLC........Go SugarBears!!

http://flashresults.com/2019_Meets/xc/NCAASC/001-1_compiled.htm

There are 9 D1 regions and each serves as a qualifier for nationals to be held this year at Madison, Wisconsin. Team finishes below........Southland pretty good with 5 of Top 12......Bears #10......this is not the best region overall although it is hard to win with Arkansas and Texas both of which have strong XC programs......

Winning individual was Jamie Crowe of Lamar.

Top UCA was Julien Jeandree in 45th inn 33:19 (5:21 per mile). Our distance crew is really not geared to 10k but more to 800-3000m so running 10k is a bit of a stretch...

FR Gracie Hyde of Benton was the only SugarBear runner to compete and finished 44th in 22:07 (5:55 per mile) for 5k.
