STRONG HOME SLATE HIGHLIGHTS 2019 SCHEDULE FOR UCA SOFTBALL

CONWAY – The University of Central Arkansas head softball coach David Kuhn has formally announced his team's 2019 schedule. A loaded home slate with two separate non-conference tournaments and a pair of matchups against Southeastern Conference foes Ole Miss and Mississippi State at Farris Field highlight an action-packed spring for the Bears.

"We play 10 games against teams that made the NCAA Tournament or postseason play last season," said Kuhn. "That will certainly be a challenge for our team. We are excited about the season and look forward to the competition and I believe that playing good teams will help your program on and off the field."

UCA will open its campaign Feb. 8-9 with the Southern Miss Tournament in Hattiesburg, Miss. The Bears will take on Southwestern Athletic Conference-rival Jackson State twice in the two-day span, while also meeting up with host Southern Mississippi and Ohio Valley Conference-representative Tennessee Tech.

The Bears will open play at Farris Field on Feb. 12 with a 6 pm contest against Lyon College. Shortly after the home opener, UCA will turn its attention to the Madeira Beach Invitational for its second-straight appearance in the Sunshine State classic. From Feb. 15-17, the Bears will take on George Mason, Monmouth, Ball State, Quinnipiac and South Dakota to cap off five games in the three-day span.

After arriving back from Florida, Farris Field will welcome the Bears for 11-straight at home. Central Arkansas is set to host a doubleheader versus in-state opponent Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Feb. 19. A mere three days later, University of Nebraska at Omaha, South Dakota State and North Alabama will all make their way to Conway, Feb. 22-24, for the Central Arkansas Invitational.

Softball powerhouse Ole Miss will test the Bears at home on Feb. 27 before they host their second tournament of the year. The Bears will take on Southeast Missouri and UAPB on March 1 to open the UCA Classic, followed by a 1:30 pm matinee against Missouri State on March 2. Central Arkansas will conclude the three-day tournament with an 11:15 am showdown with Coppin State.

"It is always great to play at the friendly confides of Farris Field," Kuhn said. "Playing at home gives you several advantages over playing on the road. I hope we can play well and get some wins. It certainly is always nice to get off to a good start."

The Bears hit the road to take on Memphis in a mid-week matchup on March 5 before returning home to open Southland Conference play. Nicholls will be the opening opponent for UCA as the Colonels travel to Conway for a three-game set March 8-9. Central Arkansas will once again step out of conference competition for a Power-5 showdown with Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Okla. on March 13.

The Bearkats of Sam Houston State will be the next SLC challenge for UCA as they travel to Farris Field March 15-16. A pair of non-conference road tilts against the University of Louisiana at Monroe on March 19 and Baylor March 20 will challenge the Bears as the full swing of conference action is set to follow.

The first weekend series on the road in SLC competition for UCA will take place in San Antonio, Texas on March 22-23 as the Bears square off with Incarnate Word. Mississippi State will greet the Bears back in Conway on March 26 in the final non-conference home game of the season. A quick turnaround will pit UCA against Lamar in Beaumont, Texas to resume conference play March 29-30.

The last of 27 non-conference games will take place on April 3 as Central Arkansas travels to Mississippi Valley State for a 4 pm first pitch. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will be the next conference foe to visit Conway April 5-6. Six-straight on the road follow the three-game set with the Islanders as UCA travels to McNeese (April 12-13) and Southeastern Louisiana (April 19-20) for back-to-back road series in the league.

The final homestand is a three-game set with Houston Baptist April 26-27. Natchitoches, La. will be the Bears home away from for consecutive weeks as they conclude regular season play against Northwestern State May 3-4.

The annual Southland Conference Tournament Championship will also be held in Natchitoches May 7-10. The Bears have qualified for the tournament in seven-consecutive seasons and will look to improve on that number with a strong regular-season outing.

"We just try to focus on one game at a time," said Kuhn. "The Southland Conference is very competitive from top to bottom. We are proud of the fact that we are just one of two teams that have played in seven straight SLC Tournaments. I hope we can continue this streak and make it to the last day of the tournament. Once you get there, anything can happen."

SHS@UCA

Not a good week for UCS Softball for sure....got blasted by Ok State in Conway on Wed....

OSU 16-20-0
UCA 1-2-3

Then BearKats came to town and left with a rare sweep of UCA at home...…..

Game 1:
SHS 3-9-0
UCA 1-1-0

Well pitched game by both starters who pitched complete games......both threw 112 pitches......Kaykyn Shepard scored UCA's only run on a solo HR....

Game 2:
SHS 10-11-0
UCA 2-4-2

Kats had 6 extra bases to UCA's 1.....at least we had 5 SBs....

Game 3:
SHS 5-11-1
UCA 2-4-2

Not only 11 hits but 5 for extra bases.....none for UCA

SHS had 31 hits in the series with 14 extra base hits...….. UCA now 1-5 in SLC and 12-16 overall.....need to get some wins...…@ULM on Tuesday, @Baylor on Thursday and the weekend series @Incarnate Word......

@Baylor

UCA 8-12-0 (14-16)
BU 5-7-2 (13-12)

Nice road win over B12 team!!! UCA scores 5 in first to get on top.....Kam Coleman gets win in 5 IP of relief...a little shaky giving up 3 doubles and a HR but held the lead and got the win. Erin Acors clears bases in 2nd with a pinch hit double.....Shepherd, Hill, Felts and Blackburn each had an rbi……..good day putting the ball in play with only one K....

Baylor has wins over South Carolina, North Carolina, Liberty, UTSA, Sam Houston State, Southern Miss, North Texas, UL-Lafayette, Southern Utah, Texas State, McNeese...………..losses include BYU, Notre Dame, Washington, Houston....they get Ok State next…..

Now to San Antonio for the weekend series with UIW.....

As far as I can tell...…… we were 3-42 against P-5 teams (although numerous near misses) ...….including 0-22 vs Big 12.....and 0-3 vs Baylor...…….good to get a win vs B12

{UPDATE: #17 OSU run ruled Baylor twice this weekend (3/22-24) by 21-2 and 9-1 but lost 2-1 also...…Waco Bears had a tough week with the loss to UCA and run ruled twice going 1-3 but at least beat a ranked team.}

@UIW

Game 3:
UCA 13-1-0 (4-5/17-16)
UIW 6-7-0 (0-6/2-22)

Always like to see us score with crooked figures....Shepherd had a huge day going 4/5 with 3 doubles, a HR, 2 runs and 5 rbis…...nice day at the plate....Morris also was terrific with the bat going 3/3 with a double and HR scoring 2 and driving in 3.....Felts was 3/4.....Crutchmer 2/5....Blackburn had 2 rbis…...after yesterday it must have felt great to whack the ball around for extra bases.....Johnson, Searcy and Reaves split the circle duties for the win...….although they gave up a triple and two HRs.….

5-0 road trip.....got to better than 500....moved into 8th place….take on Mississippi State at Farris filed on Tuesday then off to Beaumont for the weekend series with Lamar......

Game 2:
UCA 2-13-2 (3-5/16-16)

Good thing pitching was solid as Sanchez and Reaves combined for 7ks and one run...….lucky to win this one with 13 LOB.....Shepherd and Morris get the key hits driving in runs....Crutchmer goes 3/5 and scores a run while Felts went 3/4.....Blackburn and Hill each had 2 hits....

Game 1:

UCA 6-7-0 (15-16)

Weekend off to a good start..........Coleman/Searcy combine for the 3-hit win........Shepherd goes 2/3 with a double and 3 rbis......Morris goes deep with a solo HR....Hill drives in one with a double....

Mississippi State @ UCA

MSU 4-4-3 (21-10)
UCA 3-3-2 (17-17)

Dogs scored in top of 7th for the win...……….two unearned runs and a HR spelled the difference...very well pitched game by both teams...….UCA's Kamryn Coleman went the distance with 2Ks and no BBs...…..tough loss but a good sign in going head to head with the SEC....

Off to Lamar for a big weekend series........

UCA 0-4-1 (5-7/18-19)
LU 1-4-2 (8-4/17-20)

Another pitchers duel.....Cards score in 3rd on a two out double followed by a single.....UCA left tying run on 2nd in top of 7th...…..left 6 on base....Haberman walked 4 in 1st and 2nd then Reaves pitched very well for 5 IP but got the loss...…..

Game 2 of DH:

UCA 1-4-2 (5-6/18-19)
LU 2-5-2 (7-4/16-20)

Well pitched game by both teams....Cards win on walk off in 9th....Sanchez just could not do enough to get out of 9th with the win...….starts with a HBP, a sacrifice, an error, a fielder's choice and another error, a hit, a walk and a hit.....

Game 1 of DH:
UCA 8-10-1 (5-5/18-17)
LU 5-8-3 (6-4/15-20)

Vernon goes 2/4 with a double and 2 rbis…….3 LU errors and 2 WPs helped while we left 9 on.....Coleman went 5IP for the win (and stole home in the 5th) and Searcy cleaned up the final 2....
