Southland Conference Concludes 2008 Spring Meetings

FRISCO, Texas – The Southland Conference recently concluded its annual Spring Meeting with institutional presidents, athletic administrators and coaches addressing a series of competitive and academic issues facing the league. The event was held May 27-30, at the San Luis Resort in Galveston, Texas, and featured the annual year-end business meetings for football coaches, men’s and women’s basketball coaches, athletic directors, faculty representatives, senior woman administrators and the presidential Board of Directors.
The Board meeting concluded the week-long event, and the presidents spent much of their gathering discussing the Conference’s collective and institutional positions in the larger NCAA Academic Performance Program. “The Board was resolute in its intention to improve the academic performance of Southland Conference student-athletes, and lift the league’s academic standing,” Southland Conference commissioner Tom Burnett said. “Among all the numerous issues affecting the Southland, the presidents made it very clear that improved academic performance will be the top priority for the league. We expect the Board to approve multiple initiatives and action plans to see this mandate through to completion.”...
...The Conference also approved championship sites for the 2009-10 academic year, including host locations for men’s and women’s cross country (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi), women’s soccer (Northwestern State), volleyball (UTSA), men’s and women’s tennis (A&M-Corpus Christi), softball (Texas State) and baseball (A&M-Corpus Christi). Additionally, Conference football schedules for 2011 and 2012, featuring the return of Lamar’s football program, were approved...
