Ivory takes over at Pine Bluff

Pine Bluff, AR (Sports Network) - George Ivory has been named the new men's basketball coach at Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Ivory was an assistant coach at Arkansas-Pine Bluff from 2002 through 2006 and spent last season as an assistant at fellow Southwestern Athletic Conference member Mississippi Valley State.

"I'm excited about this opportunity and I look forward to getting started working towards winning championships at UAPB," said Ivory.

A 1988 graduate of Mississippi Valley and the 1987 SWAC Player of the Year, Ivory has also been an assistant at Jackson State and Grambling.

"We were looking for someone with knowledge of the Southwestern Athletic Conference," said UAPB athletic director Skip Perkins. "Coach Ivory has been in this league his entire adult life and he knows exactly what it takes to play, coach, recruit and win in the SWAC."

Ivory will take over for Van Holt, who resigned in March after six seasons at the helm. Holt compiled a record of 50-124, including a 35-73 mark in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.

The Golden Lions were 13-18 this past season, marking the best finish in Holt's tenure. Mississippi Valley State eliminated Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the SWAC semifinals en route to the conference tournament title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

knew this was coming last night, not that I was going to scoop or break news, just happened to be in the right place at the right time type of deal.

Dickie Nutt, Todd Day and Corliss Williamson all interviewed, but were never really considered for the job as I was told. Was told this new coach is a good guy, curious to see how he will do in PB.

That is the exact reason that I would have gone outside the conference to find someone who didn't know about the SWAC.
