In response to demands from coaches and fans of college basketball, as well as rising rancor from media coverage of the sport, the NCAA promised that it would make changes to the way in which college basketball chooses its national champion starting in 2009.

“We didn’t want to throw away seventy years of tradition on a whim, but tension against the tournament-style format has been building for years,” said NCAA President Myles Brand on Monday morning after a three-hour meeting with university presidents. “Ultimately, we think that it is time that college basketball came into agreement with our other major revenue sport so that the fans can finally be satisfied with end-of-season matchups that are both satisfying and will conclusively determine the best team in the sport.”....

You gotta read the rest of the story.

Just as with my innovative and practical solution for replacing BCS with a FBS playoff, NCAA could simply seed UCLA, North Carolina, Duke and one team out of a "preferred pool" consisting of Michigan, Georgetown and Notre Dame based on who has the best record against mid-majors with losing records. These four would be all seeded #1 and advance directly to Elite Eight. Others teams would be seeded based solely on a random draw because it does not really matter. Only requirement is that these teams have a winning record with all ACC, SEC and Big East teams being eligible irrespective of record because they come from "power basketball conferences". Other conference winners (such as Southland and Sunbelt champs) irrespective of records and RPIs would have to play a three game elimination play-in tourney to be eligible for the random drawing. None of these games will be televised (or reported in ADG) and all will be played on a single weekend at Iowa State.

Should one of the #1 seeds lose in the Elite Eight, a replay game will be allowed until they win.

Classes will be suspended for all players participating as long as their team wins. In case of loss, the players will be declared inelgible for the next season unless they can pass 24 hour of correspondence courses during the summer (this is very possible as Mississippi State proved that several years ago in a quiet NCAA test case with football players).
