NCAA has yet to make a ruling:
ASU self-imposes fine after violations
ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE
JONESBORO — Arkansas State has self-imposed a $43,500 fine for NCAA violations in academic certification of athletes.
The school apologized to the NCAA in a Jan. 29 letter and said the improper certifications grew from “inadvertent mistakes.” Arkansas State said it has taken steps to prevent the problems from reoccurring.
The university did not release the names or sex of the 21 athletes or identify their sports because of privacy laws. Men’s basketball player Yima-Chia Kur’s identity came to light after he became the only one of the group not to receive a waiver to continue playing and missed 15 games.
Chia-Kur has since returned to action.
Arkansas State discovered the certification problems in August, though they weren’t made public until October, when the Jonesboro Sun published a story about the internal investigation following a Freedom of Information Act request.
Academic advisers discovered discrepancies between reports to the NCAA for student-athlete academic certification and what its student-athletes had actually accomplished toward degree completion. The advisers found the problems while doing routine work before the start of the fall semester.
The school said the problems did not involve unethical conduct or intent to break the rules. No athletes were accused of improper actions.
Violations included credit for too many elective classes and percentages of total credit hours toward a degree being rounded up instead of rounded down, as required by the NCAA. Employees responsible for the miscalculations no longer work in athletic certification.
“This matter has been very distressing to all those involved in intercollegiate athletics at Arkansas State University,” Chancellor Robert L. Potts said in a news release. “However, I am pleased that the concerns, once discovered, were immediately reported to the proper entities for a full investigative review. Following the review, Arkansas State University began implementing the investigative group’s recommendations to correct this matter as well as to ensure full compliance with NCAA certification rules in the future.”
The school came up with the $43,500 figure by assessing a fine of $500 per student-athlete multiplied by the number of games played while the student was ineligible.
The NCAA had not responded to Arkansas State’s letter by Tuesday.
