Stegall was released by the Mets Organization this past week and is wanting to play college football. Mets will pay for his school. He played at Greenwood HS, AR and signed with U. of Miami.

Signed full scholarship offer to play QB with Miami before being drafted in MLB.

he was a bad, bad man in HS. I'd take him in a heartbeat.

He was an ASU commit (I think) until Miami swooped in at the last minute.

Miami hired the QB coach from ULM who could not convince Stegall to even consider ULM. Miami needed to sign a QB last minute and the ULM guy swooped in. The kicker is that before the ULM coach left for Miami he convinced the guy that will be the starter for ULM this year to not visit ASU because they had Stegall already.

Recruiting is a weird, incestuous world.

If he doesn't sign with another MLB team then my money is on him walking on at UA since the Mets will pay his way. He will have the full 5 years to play 4.

You don't think he'd have a better shot to play at ASU?
Are you guys set at QB after Leonard?

I do like that you used my "swooped in" phrase.

I am going to swoop in and say ASU has Nut Butterfield waiting in the wings, but of course there's no such thing as a sure thing and it's always nice to have two.

And UA has Mallett and Wilson for awhile, and Petrino is sure to go get some better players in the coming years. If I were Stegall I'd stay away from there.

I would be ware of uaf if I were a QB.......not really known as a place that develops QBs....Grovey was really the last really great QB and his was in large part true grit and foot speed with a monster Oline......

Really? You do know that there's a different coach up there right now?
One that's kind of known for his work with QBs?

If I'm Stegall, I avoid UAF, but not because of the reason you mentioned.

Maybe, but I think the fact that he doesn't have to worry about being on scholarship means he might stay closer to home. I would certainly love to have him at ASU and there is already a relationship there. After Leonard, Butterfield will be most likely a RS FR and we have two others that will be RS Sophomores at that point.

Swooped is the best way to describe it and lets face it, you're a wordsmith.
