State Baseball To UCA
The Arkansas Activities Association announced late last week that Conway will host the state baseball championship games May 20-21.
The championships will be held at renovated Bear Stadium on the campus of the University of Central Arkansas.
Since the championship site format began in 1999, the games had always been held at Baum Stadium in Fayetteville. Because of Arkansas' home SEC finale that weekend, Baum Stadium was not available for use.
Officials tried to have the games moved to Springdale's Arvest Park, but the Northwest Arkansas Naturals are hosting the Arkansas Travelers that weekend.
AAA officials wanted the games at Dickey-Stephens Park, home of the Travelers, but stadium officials declined to bid. Conway instead bid for it and won.
Bear Stadium holds about 1,000 fans and some bleachers can be added down one foul line if needed.
We weren't one of the top choices, but we got it anyway.
