Oklahoma State University women’s basketball coach Kurt Budke and assistant women’s basketball coach Miranda Serna were killed along with two others Thursday night in a plane crash in Perry County, Arkansas.

Budke and Serna were on a recruiting trip to Arkansas. The other two individuals, including the pilot, were not affiliated with the university. There were no survivors.

“The Oklahoma State family is devastated by this tragedy,” said OSU President Burns Hargis. “Our hearts and prayers go out to the families of Kurt Budke, Miranda Serna and the other victims...

A tragedy without question. I have some experience with this. My brother, David
was a pilot and he and two others were killed in a crash in Hot Springs in 1996. My
thoughts and prayers are with the families.
I heard they were on a recruiting trip in Arkansas. Anyone Know where?

Death of OSU women's coach affects UCA staff
Posted: November 18, 2011 - 11:38am
By David McCollum

University of Central Arkansas women's basketball coach Matt Daniel said the deaths Kurt Budke, his counterpart at Oklahoma State, and Budke's assistant in an airplane crash was "very sobering" to the UCA staff.

Daniel, who formerly was an assistant at the University of Missouri, knew both Budke and Serna well from his days in the Big 12 and had come across the two regularly on the recruiting trail.

"I've got an assistant (Caronia Randle) in tears right now," Daniel said. "She knew Miranda really well."

Budke. 50, who had been the coach of the Cowgirls since 2005, and Serna, who had been his assistant for seven years at Louisiana Tech and OSU, were among those killed Thursday evening in a crash of a single-engine aircraft in a remote terrain in Perry County...

Happened in Perryville. Being a long-time Oklahoma State fan, people involved with the University had finally had closure from the men's basketball tragedy with the ten year anniversary memorial in January. Hard to believe something this horrible has happened again.

One thing for sure...I will never fly on a single engine aircraft again. If that one
engine quits and you are not over open terrain, there is little hope of survival.
I know flying is still the safest means of travel, but it seems to me that the largest
number of crashes involve the single engine. You hear about them all the time.

Once again, thoughts and prayers to the families and to the OSU nation.

Prayers to OSU Family. Too many connections to OSU for many Arkies to not have lots of feelings about this. Just a few miles from UCA campus. Heard somewhere today they had been in Little Rock recruiting but have not seen that in print.

Don't know this to be true, but I think the Hatcher twins at CAC have some connection to Oklahoma State. Their older sister Kelsey transferred from OSU to SMU. Just speculation though, not that it's important.
